DESCRIPTION OF THE TOUR
The hike starts at the parking in Montaione, Piazza Gramsci, where you can easily leave your car. We meet there Tuesday at 09.00 o’clock.
The total distance to be walked is around 9km and it will take us approximately around 3 hours. Due to the fact that most parts of the hike are along shady trails, it is even in summertime a good hike also for less experienced hikers. Solid shoes are recommended though.
From our meeting point we start to walk down towards the Egola river, leaving the village behind us, using pathways along olive trees. Once arrived at the Egola Valley, we continue along the river, crossing it a few times and enjoying the peaceful nature surrounding us. During spring and autumn the river runs more water than in summertimes but the special atmosphere and character of this hike remains the same, thanks to the unique flora and fauna of this place.
After passing an uphill part we will reach the Roman Cistern, an important archeological site of Montaione, from where we have one of the best views over the village and the surroundings. Another trail through our oaks woods brings us back to the village, and just the last part will be on asphalt before reaching the roundabout of Montaione. From here it’s just another 15 minutes and we are back to our starting point. To round up our tour in the nicest way, we have the possibility to enjoy some ice cream or cappuccino together in Montaione.
